Musical Accompaniment for Silent Films

While a graduate student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, I was asked to play the classroom piano to accompany a film that had no sound during an evening lecture. Having studied classical piano and provided accompaniment to musical theater productions and comedy improv troupes, I was completely enthralled in the experience of playing live music to silent films. As I previously worked at The National Comedy Hall of Fame Museum in Florida for several years, I was no stranger to the unique filmic storytelling that was brought by comedic artists such as Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin. Being a silent film accompanist allows me to take an active part in that storytelling while utilizing a musical instrument to help narrative form and structure.

After completing my academic studies, I’ve had the pleasure of accompanying many screenings at The Museum of Modern Art and participated in special programs organized by The Women Film Pioneers Project as well as the museum’s annual festival, To Save and Project.

With my background in cinema studies and music performance, I continue to celebrate film history by entertaining audiences with live improvisational music in movie theaters, academic institutions and cultural organizations.
